TheapplicationandinterpretationofthefourGenevaConventionsof1949andtheirtwoAdditionalProtocolsof1977havedevelopedsignificantlyintheseventyyearssincetheInternationalCommitteeoftheRedCross(ICRC)firstpublisheditsCommentariesontheseimportanthumanitariantreaties.Topromoteabetterunderstandingof,andrespectfor,thisbodyoflaw,theICRCcommissionedacomprehensiveupdateofitsoriginalCommentaries,ofwhichthisisthethirdvolume.TheThirdConvention,relativetothetreatmentofprisonersofwarandtheirprotections,takesintoaccountdevelopmentsinthelawandpracticeinthepastsevendecadestoprovideup-to-dateinterpretationsoftheConvention.ThenewCommentaryhasbeenreviewedbyhumanitarianlawpractitionersandacademicsfromaroundtheworld.ThisnewCommentarywillbeanessentialtoolforanyoneinvolvedwithinternationalhumanitarianlaw.
